Should Agricultural and Resource Economists Care that the Subjective Expected Utility Hypothesis is False?

چکیده

This paper argues that the subjective expected utility (SEU) model has serious limitations in both positive and normative analysis. In addition to experimental evidence, I discuss examples where alternatives to the SEU provide a richer framework for the study of problems of choice under uncertainty. Opportunities for improved positive and normative analysis using non-SEU models are discussed. * Copyright 1998 by Richard T. Woodward. all rights reserved. Why environmental and resource economists should care about non-expected utility models

Experimental and theoretical analysis has shown that the conventional expected utility (EU) and subjective expected utility (SEU) models, which are linear in probabilities, have serious limitations in certain situations. We argue here that these limitations are often highly relevant to the work that environmental and natural resource economists do. We discuss some of the experimental evidence a...

Robust Dynamic Optimization and Natural Resource Management: Numerical Methods and Fisheries Management

Most resource management problems exist in a setting of not only risk, but of Knightian uncertainty. That is, not only is the problem stochastic, the underlying distribution for this randomness is not known with certainty and is difficult to recover. When faced with such problems of uncertainty or ambiguity, many decision makers do not follow a simple subjective expected utility type behavior (...

Rational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration

Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...

Extensions of the Subjective Expected Utility Model

The subjective expected utility (SEU) model rests on very strong assumptions about the consistency of decision making across a wide range of situations. The descriptive validity of these assumptions has been extensively challenged by behavioral psychologists during the last few decades, and the normative validity of the assumptions has also been reappraised by many statisticians, philosophers, ...
